Patent Engineer

Inpria, a subsidiary of JSR Corporation, has an immediate opening for a Patent Engineer based in Corvallis, OR. We seek a driven and motivated candidate to play an impactful role as part of a pioneering and talented team that is focused on extending semiconductor lithography through innovative photoresist design and advanced material development. You will use your engineering, organizational, and collaborative skills to work with inventors, scientists, and the IP team to harvest inventions, draft strong patent applications, and guide future discoveries and innovations in metal oxide photoresist materials.

The ideal candidate has a demonstrated ability to communicate complex chemical concepts to a non-technical audience, and can translate technical ideas and results into strong, well-supported patent applications. The ideal candidate has familiarity with the U.S. patent system and is comfortable working with both legal and R&D teams.

This is an in-office, Corvallis-based position. Remote work may be permitted on a limited basis with approval from your manager and subject to Inpria business needs.


Primary Responsibilities:

    Patent Drafting and IP Strategy:

  • Collaborate with inventors and engineers to turn chemical innovations into strong patent applications.
  • Attend technical R&D and engineering meetings to understand the technology and its future directions.
  • Identify key concepts and technologies as candidates for patent protection.
  • Translate internal R&D data and results into clear ­and concise specifications, including drawings and diagrams.
  • Work closely with patent attorneys, agents, and inventors to prepare patent applications.

    Research and Analysis:

  • Conduct thorough research and landscape analyses on the prior art to inform the patent drafting process.
  • Analyze prior art to identify unique areas for innovation.
  • Review and analyze cited references in office actions to distinguish new inventions from the prior art.

    Learning and Career Development:

  • Stay updated on industry trends, patent law changes, and technological advancements.
  • Attend relevant workshops, seminars, and conferences.


Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. (or equivalent experience) in Chemistry, Engineering, Physics, Biochemistry, or another relevant field
  • 1+ years' experience in technical writing or patent drafting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and SharePoint.
  • Superb oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment and shift priorities as needed.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment drug test.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the U.S. patent system and laws.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemistry, preferably familiar with inorganic, organometallic, or metal oxide chemistry.
  • 1+ years of patent drafting experience.
  • Docket management experience, including storage and organization of documents.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted drafting tools.
  • Proven experience in searching and analyzing patents and academic literature.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to use a keyboard and mouse for word processing and data analysis.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods in an office environment.
